The Houston Rockets are expected to part ways with Carmelo Anthony. Once cleared waivers, should the Golden State Warriors consider signing him?
The Golden State Warriors do not need Carmelo Anthony, but Carmelo Anthony might need the Golden State Warriors. And, after two failed stints with other Western Conference foes, the Dubs might be able to revive his career or at least end it with a graceful sendoff.
However, Melo isn’t actually a free agent yet. He’s still in Houston yet hasn’t played the team’s last three games, two of which he was deemed inactive and one of which he ended up not dressing. Either way, Melo’s time in Houston seems to be coming to an end.
That doesn’t mean that he wasn’t, for a time, a valuable contributor. During his ten games, Melo averaged 13.4 points on 40.5% from the field. Although he’s played to his expectations, Melo has been unsurprisingly blamed for the Rockets 6-7 start.
The Rockets Big 4 (Eric Gordon, Carmelo Anthony, James Harden and Chris Paul) have all averaged under 43% from the field with Gordon at just 32.3%. Shooting four more times per game than Melo, Gordon seems to be more of the problem for the Rockets.
Deciding the fate of Melo isn’t in our hands and figuring out their issues goes far up the organization’s latter. According to the stats, it’s the group’s combined slow start hurting their record.
That said, if released, here’s why the Dubs should target Melo.
